What is a Dental Emergency?

There are many different types of dental emergencies.  You may have a broken tooth, a tooth that has been knocked out, or a dental infection.  No matter the nature of your problem, your Rockville, MD emergency dentists are here to help.

Common dental emergencies may include any of the following:

Broken tooth

Tooth knocked out or loosened

Broken restoration

Toothache

Jaw pain

Swelling

The most common emergencies we see are swelling and severe tooth pain, which is common in root infections. An infected tooth may require a gentle root canal to relieve symptoms and restore tooth health.

How to Handle Your Dental Emergency

If your tooth has been knocked out, we recommend placing it in milk or saliva until you see the dentist. With immediate intervention, your dentist may be able to restore the tooth to your gum.

For tooth pain and swelling, we recommend contacting our dental office as soon as possible to schedule an emergency dental exam.  Treating your pain with over-the-counter medications only, or hoping it will improve without treatment, may cost you your tooth.

If ever you’re unsure whether your situation is a dental emergency, we encourage you to reach out to a member of our dental team.  We can assess your symptoms and make the best determination for you.
